Most name advice stops at the moment of introduction. But whether you still know someone's name in three weeks is decided later — by whether you ever had to pull it out of your head again, and when.

Testing yourself beats reviewing

The instinct when you want to remember something is to look at it more. The research points the other way. In a well-known set of experiments, people who spent part of their study time being tested on material retained substantially more a week later than people who spent the same total time restudying it — even though the restudy group felt more confident.[1]

That last part matters for names. Rereading a list of colleagues feels productive and is nearly useless. Covering the list and trying to produce each name feels uncomfortable and is where the learning happens. Difficulty during retrieval is not a sign that it is going badly.

Gaps do the work that repetition cannot

Repeating a name five times in one minute produces one memory event. Recalling it once today, once tomorrow, and once next week produces three, each after some forgetting has set in. The second kind is what builds a memory you can still reach for later.

There is also a practical argument specific to names: you cannot practise a person the way you practise a flashcard. You see them when you see them. So the schedule has to be something you can actually run — which in practice means short, and on your phone.

A schedule that works for people

A simple expanding ladder is enough. There is nothing magic about the exact numbers; what matters is that the gap grows each time you succeed, and collapses when you fail.

Only count the second encounter onwards. Getting a name right immediately after being told it proves nothing — you are reading it out of short-term memory. The meaningful measure is whether you can produce it after a day has passed, which is why Namaegao's report separates "answered correctly" from "still knew it the next time".

Sleep is part of the schedule

One reason the day-1 review is worth more than another round on day 0 is that sleep happens in between. Reviews of the neuroscience describe memory consolidation during sleep as an active process, with coordinated activity across sleep stages implicated in stabilising newly formed memories.[2]

The practical version: learning a set of names in the evening and testing yourself the next morning is a reasonable pattern to build a habit around. It is not a magic trick, and it will not compensate for never having encoded the name in the first place.

Common mistakes

Let something else run the schedule

Namaegao tracks who you got wrong and brings them back on a later day — 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 — until they graduate. You just answer.
